Effective control of spiders requires an integrated approach and the cooperation of the homeowner and the pest management professionals (PMPs). A proper program should include the following measures:
• Inspection and identification: (PMPs) should conduct a thorough inspection both indoors and outdoors to identify problematic spiders, sources of infestation and their points of entry.
• Physical controls: Non-chemical techniques are essential to ridding a structure of spiders. Removing webs, egg sacs and areas for harborage will help control spiders long-term. Sealing boxes and storing them off the floor will help prevent spider entry. Additionally, removing clutter in storage areas and outdoors will eliminate web-building sites. It is also helpful to exclude spiders from structures by installing weather stripping or caulking around doors and windows.
Changing exterior lights that attract insects can also be helpful to control spider populations. Yellow “bug lights” can be used, or you can install a bulb type that is less attractive to insects, such as sodium vapor bulbs.
• Chemical controls: Most water-based sprays will not stick to spider webs, so spraying the web will probably not result in control of the spider. Look for webs in areas around entryways, patios, porches and windows, and use a small broom or vacuum to remove spider webs before treating.
Remember, spiders are often present because they are feeding on insects around a structure. Those food sources can be eliminated by the perimeter application of a broad-spectrum insecticide. Spraying the foundation of a building with a residual insecticide is also helpful for controlling hunting spiders that enter buildings from the ground.
Once populations are controlled, a regular service maintenance program will help ensure long-term control and comfort for customers.
